How to Make a Designer Red Purse Fondant Cupcake Topper

Three things -

Today, I made a Little Mermaid Cake for a pretty little girl named Mhia who celebrated her fourth birthday.

Today, I chanced upon a sale in the mall so I bought some office pants.

Today, I had my picture taken with Mig Ayesa! What a rush! He's super nice. Wish I baked cupcakes so I can give him some. Rock of Ages definitely rocks!

Wait... that's three already? And I still haven't gotten around to introducing this post, hahaha! Well, here it is - read on.

Today (after that long introduction), we're all about bags. Cute red purses. In fondant. Fashionable, totally.
Purses you can tote around then after basking in its cute-ness, devour it with much gusto. Clearly an  epic sugar-rush beyond proportions.

This tutorial has been requested several times so here I thought I'd make a proper tutorial.I It's fairly easy and requires minimal tools. Want to see how I made it?
How to Make Designer Red Purse Cupcake Topper

What we need -

Fondant in red and ivory

Stitching tool (or toothpick or knife)
Gold dragees
Knife
Brush and water
Here's How
(1) Roll red fondant into a ball, press it flat and shape into a rectangle. Make sure to retain the round edges.
(2) Using the stitching tool (or toothpick or knife), "stitch" a rectangle on to the base. Do the same to its 2 sides.
(3) Using the stitching tool, run diagonal lines onto the front of the purse.
(4) Repeat it but this time, run it the opposite direction.
(5) Roll out a small amount of red fondant and cut it into a rectangle
(6) Cut two of the sides, like so.
(7) Run through a border.
(7) Repeat steps 3 and 4 on to the rolled red fondant.
(8) Attach the red rolled fondant to the bag and paste a small rectangle onto the center of the bag
(9) Add the gold dragees detail.
(10) Roll ivory fondant into a long thin rope
(11) Twist two long ropes and cut a portion to serve as the bag's handle and attach to the bag.
(12) Here's the finished product :)
Depending on the size, you can either make it as a cake or cupcake topper. Plus, you can change the color of the handle, dragees and main bag for more versatility.

Turon Cupcakes

Because it's the Philippine Independence Day today, for a limited time only, actually, just for this post, I am bringing back the Pinoy Cupcakes Project that actually helped jump start this blog.

The Pinoy Cupcake Project is basically a collection of cupcakes featuring the best of the Filipino Flavors. Want to some of the cupcakes I created? Read on! (but please return to this post, okay?)
These cupcakes are actually called Banana Cupcakes with Jackfruit Creamcheese Frosting. But for me, they are Turon Cupakes. Turon is a Filipino dessert/snack consisting of bananas (saba specifically) rolled into spring rolls and deep fried until golden brown. Some would leave it at that but other variations would add langka/jackfruit embedded within the bananas or some would even roll the turon into sugar before serving. Ahhh... mouthwatering.
Here's Bake Happy Blogger's 411 on eating turon:
(1) I was already in college when I was introduced to the version of turon which has langka on it. Wow it was delicious!
(2) I eat turon deconstructed, open the springroll, eat the bananas first then the the springroll last. Yummy!
Turon Cupcakes

1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup oil
2 eggs
2 cups flour
11/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup milk
2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup mashed banana -- now now now, a word about bananas, as long as you do not see molds, your bananas are still good for baking :)

Here's how:
(1) Pre-heat oven to 350F
(2) In a big bowl, sift or dry whisk all dry ingredients
(3) In a separate bowl, mix brown sugar and oil until well combined
(4) Add the eggs one at a time.

(5) Add dry ingredients in three batches alternating with 2 batches of milk.

(6) Fold in mashed bananas and add the vanilla extract.
(7) Fill lined cupcake pans two thirds full and bake for 15 to 18 minutes or until done

For the Jackfruit Cream Cheese Frosting, follow the basic cream cheese frosting recipe. Instead of vanilla extract, I used vanilla beans this time.
And for the last step, add in 1/2 cup mashed jackfruit.
Enjoy the cupcakes!

How to Make Fondant Poodle Cupcakes

Have I ever told you about my pudgy hands? Not only are they pudgy, they're also small. The size of a CD. Not kidding. I mean, it doesn't come useful when I'm in front of a keyboard trying to type control+b or control+v with only one hand. Talk about awkward.

But then again, I love my hands because no matter how pudgy they look, they helped me make these adorable poodles. If you have read my blog long enough, you'll recognize these from this post. In Bake Happy's Facebook page, there exists one, too. These poodles were also featured on National TV! But I wasn't able to catch it. Too bad.
And just in case you're wondering why I am suddenly talking about my hands, it's because I'm nervous! Because, you're about to see them. Why? Because I made a video tutorial. Just to let you know, this is just my third video, here's the first and second. Hopefully, I got better at it and not actually regressed.

Bake Happy friends, I have a favor to ask. Please get used to my pudgy hands because from time to time, instead of the usual step by step pictures for tutorials, you'll be seeing my hands showing you how to make cupcake toppers. And when you I post a video tutorial, that's when you know I got too lazy to type instructions.

And on to the tutorial we go:
Fondant Poodle Cupcakes

What we need -

Fondant in white, black and ivory
Fondant rolling pin
Toothpick
Knife/offset spatula
Royal icing in a piping bag with #2 tip
Sprinkles (big hearts and small round white)
Ball tool
Small flower fondant cutter
Paste as glue/paste
Small brush for the water
Here's how:
Want to see a bit of the behind the scenes? This is a camera I used to shoot the tutorial. Its attached to a very very very vintage tripod which I absolutely love. It's actually in between me and the fondant. Kinda awkward to move when I try to rely on the screen to see how I was doing but I hope I did okay.
And oh, by the way, instead of white, you can definitely try making pink or brown poodles. No matter what their colors are, poodles are absolutely adorable :)

Goldilocks Bakebook: Favorite Recipes from the Philippines' Best Loved Bakeshop

I am a Goldiocks baby. And I have proof. Pinky swear. Later. Much later. No, just a bit later.
I have something cool to show you first.
Goldilocks recently released a baking book. It's a compilation of their tried and tested recipes. Something we, Filipinos have the opportunity to savor in one too many occasions we celebrate. I mean, who doesn't know Goldilocks?

In my opinion, the release of this book is about time! And so generous of this iconic bakeshop to share their secrets which us.

Want to show what's inside? You can see recipes for something very familiar like the Black Forest, Ube Cake and the Sans Rival.
Or (at least for me) something unfamiliar, like Neapolitan Cake or this magnificent Chocolate Surprise Cake.
What I love about this book (aside from the very recipes tucked inside the pages) is the plastic cover. When you buy the book, it comes with this sturdy plastic cover which protects it from the wear and tear of referring to the recipes all the time. As you can see, I seem to have worn out my copy already. I sometimes bring it out with me to read. It has even come with me to a Korean and Chinese Restaurant. I am a geek that way.
The Goldilocks Bake Book is not just a recipe book. It also chronicled the Bakeshop's journey from a single store to the massive empire it is now. All because of a dream two ambitious women had. Love the vintage pictures of their "behind the scenes" operations through out the years.
Here are some old pictures of their celebration cakes. I love looking at these. The cake as the centerpiece of every occasion.
At the end of the book, Goldilocks asked their valued customers about their Goldilocks experience. I enjoyed reading this. No matter how different we all are, it just seems we're one and the same when we share our experiences. And I am about to share with you mine.
On my first birthday, I had a Goldilocks Sansrival Cake. See that telltale yellow gingham-ish box? Goldilocks. Please note that this is one of the few times I am able to rock a dress and freakishly short hair. My sister is in her high chair eagerly awaiting for her slice of the cake. Up to now, I still see her eyes twinkle whenever there is a Sans Rival Cake. My two moms can't wait to have a bite of the gloriously rich cake, too!
Here we are on our sixth (my sister) and 5th (me) birthdays. We had a mocha cake. I so love looking at my sister's baby photos. She is such a doll, such a happy baby!
And here I am on my big bash seventh birthday. Since it was my seventh, I got a customized cake with a Disney theme. My mom was telling me I fought tooth and nail to wear this yellow Barbie dress even though it's a size smaller than my already small frame. But I think it looked good. Still does don't you think? And I can not let this pass, don't you also love the iconic 80's "handa"? Hotdogs on a stick stuck in a cabbage? :) Love it.
Have a Goldi-Good-Day, Goldilocks! Can't wait to try your recipes.
