How to Make Philippine Flag Cupcake Toppers

Hi Amie,

This is for you! Yup, the Amie who sent me the lovely mail earlier today. This is for you (oops, I said that already, didn't I?)

She saw the Philippine Independence Day Cupcakes I made a year ago and asked me if there is a tutorial for the cupcake toppers. Well… the answer is no, unfortunately. And I wouldn’t want to send her a long mail with no pictures (that would be sad) so I decided to do a proper tutorial.

Amie, I hope I am able to help. I’ll be cheering for you (in spirit) this weekend.

The topper she asked a tutorial for was the Philippine flag.

Don’t worry, Amie, I took lots (and lots) of pictures to guide you.

The Philippine Flag Cupcake Topper

What you’ll need:

Fondant (in white, blue and red) – if you’re in a rush, a gum paste mix is available in Cook’s Exchange. Just add water and knead… tadaahhh… instant gum paste. Or if you’re really, really pressed for time, there’s a ready to use white rolled fondant in Gourdo’s
Rolling pin
Ruler (this’ll be your best friend when making the topper)
Knife
Water (just a tiny bit)
Brush (a small one for the details – sun and stars)
Yellow food coloring (preferably the gel kind)
The flag we’ll be making is 1 inch by 1 ½ inches in size (told yah, the ruler is your best friend).
So first in order is to roll the white fondant until an eighth of an inch thick.
Next, do the same for the red and blue fondant.

Using the ruler, cut out several 1 inch by 1 ½ inches rectangles and a few 1 by 1 inch squares. I cut out twelve 1 inch by 1 ½ inches rectangles and three 1 by 1 inch squares
Cut out the red and blue fondant as well, this time the specs are ½ inch by 1 ½ inches. Since I’m making 12 toppers, I made 12 blues and 12 reds.
Next, cut the white square fondants diagonally such that you’ll have 4 triangles formed per each square cut.
So what do we need the white 1 inch by 1 ½ inches fondant rectangles for? We’ll be using it as a base. The blues, reds and whites of the flag need something solid to stick on.
It’s really taking shape now isn’t it? So what do we do now? Arrange the pieces so they’d look like our flag.
Why? So we can trace where we’d need to cut to make room for the white part of the flag.
Once determined, remove the pieces and cut the excess reds and blues.
Dip the brush into the water and lightly brush the white base.
Arrange the parts of the flag… red, white and blue.
We’re getting there! Next is painting the details. Squeeze a bit of gel food color into a small container and dip the brush
For the sun, make an asterisk first, then draw a circle in the middle.
For the stars, I just made a small dot (I mean, the topper is sooo small for such details – they’d hardly notice it... it'll be our little secret)
Let it dry for a bit. While waiting for it to dry, wanna see the cupcakes I made? They look so sweet!

Hope this helps you, Amie! Good luck and enjoy the coming weekend!
Happy Cupcaking,
Aikko
